There is no rule that says you must preserve your old status. And there is no rule that says you need to start from scratch. The challenge is making the right trade-off for you.
Three possible directions

Sometimes stepping back is the smartest way forward. A more junior role, a different title or lower compensation can help you gain local experience, rebuild credibility and enter the market.
The question is not whether to “start lower.” It is why, how far, and for how long.

Your experience may still be valuable — just not in the same role, industry or context. A pivot means identifying what genuinely transfers, what the new market values, and where your experience can create value differently.

Sometimes relocation exposes something bigger: you don’t actually want to rebuild the career you had before. That can mean a new profession, consulting, freelancing, a portfolio career or building a business.
Reinvention is not about starting over. It is about deciding what you want to carry forward.

The purpose is to make a realistic career decision and know what to do next.

When that is the case, we can continue into a focused three-session process. I will recommend continuing only when I believe there is useful work to do beyond the initial Career Reset Session.
